is an avid hill walker, member of Mountaineering Council of Ireland and a
volunteer with Mountain Meitheal which repairs and conserves mountain trails.
He is also a volunteer and Public Relations Officer with SEMRA: South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association. He
lives just outside Tipperary Town, a few minutes from the Galtees and the Glen
of Aherlow. Over the past thirty years, his passion for hill walking has taken

The Glen of Aherlow is a gem of a holiday destination, thankfully largely
undiscovered, which will make a wonderful holiday experience for you, family

This is an intriguing early Christian site founded by St. Berrihert, a Saxon holyman who
arrived with his father and two brothers in the Glen around 840AD. If you have kids with you, this
site will appeal to their imagination. It’s very affordable too – actually
while it’s on private land, it’s free of charge! Rick Grogan is the landowner
and visitors to the Kyle are welcome.
While the site is modest in size, it is rich in
content mirroring a temple-like complex
with a pilgrim’s path, a holy well and a fascinating area spread out with a mix
of ancient crosses and gravestones. This area is the Kyle and all the stones
you see date from the 7th, 8th and 9th century
and have been laid out in an elliptical stonewall or enclosure. To the east of
the Kyle is St. Berrihert’s Well,
which is 20M wide and 1.5M deep. Local tradition
says that water from this well cannot be boiled while stones from the well will
save you from fire. While St. Berrihert’s is situated in the middle of the
Glen, it’s not actively promoted so as to preserve its uniqueness.
You’ll need to ask the Tourist Office for precise directions by road and it also involves
a hike across some fields before you happen upon the Kyle. Alternatively, ask
your local guide to include it on your guided tour in the Glen. It’s a magical
place.

Further
east from St. Berrihert’s, you’ll discover St. Pecaun’s Well, Church and Cell.
St. Pecaun (also known as St. Began) was a 6th
century anchorite. The anchoritic lifestyle was one of the earliest forms
of Christian monastic living. Anchorites like St. Pecaun lived in a very simple
cell adjoining a church and were supposed to remain in their cells in the case
of all eventualities. They ate very frugal meals and their day was
characterised by prayer and contemplation.
St. Berrihert’s Kyleからさらに東へ進むと、St.

Clonbeg Church
A delightful stone
cut country church, especially ideal if you can visit on a Sunday morning when Dean Gerald Field and his congregation
will welcome you. Understated from the outside, this church has wonderful
carved wood interior creating a warm welcoming ambience. Behind the church is
another holy well, St. Sedna’s, with
ribbons and other pieces of clothing tied to the surrounding trees as a
reminder that it still is an active site for those seeking solace.
Clonbeg Church

Step Back 4,000 Years
Darby’s
Bed is an amazing megalith passage tomb,
easily accessible by walking the route marked from the village of Galbally.
Again, like St. Berrihert’s Kyle, it is one of the undiscovered gems of the
Glen of Aherlow.
Legend has it that Diarmuid and Grainne
rested here one night on their flight from Fionn Mac Cumhaill. Sharing the
legend of Fionn MacCumhaill while exploring Darby’s Bed will stimulate the imagination
of kids and adults alike. This megalithic
tomb is an amazing structure
comprising one enormous rock slab resting steadily across a number of famous
cairns which measures approximately 25m north -south and 22m east-west.
When you return to the village, drop into
Kathleen Frazer at Mulvey's Coffee Shop
where she does big cafetieres of coffee for just €2…..or treat yourself to a
great hearty lunch that she offer daily to local farmers and visitors alike –
comfort food at its best! Not a Michelin star in sight…just fantastic country
food like bacon and cabbage cooked with passion.
Afterwards, visit the ruins of Moore Abbey,
just outside the village. A Franciscan
Abbey dating from 1204, the well preserved ruins emanate a real sense of
serenity notwithstanding its history when it was dissolved like so many
monasteries under Henry VIII’s decree and monks were beheaded.
NATURAL &BUILT ENVIRONMENT
The Glen is really about its stunning
natural environment with the low lying Slievenamuck
range dipping down into the Glen and, from where, the majestic Galtee mountain
range rise up with Galteemore, the
highest peak at just over 3,000ft.
Well, maybe it’s not as high as Mount Fuji at over 12,000ft, yet it
does have that magical effect on locals and visitors alike.
Step Back 4,000 Years

NATURAL & BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Whether you visit during the winter or the
summer, just watch the mountains from any of the vantage points in the Glen
such as the Christ The King stature
and experience the mountains change their hue with the changing cloud
formations or with the sunlight bathing the mountains. Be at ease as you watch
the mountains go through a series of changes…take your time, take five minutes,
ten minutes, half an hour and just immerse yourself in the serenity that these
mountains evoke.

There are numerous walking and hiking
trails in and around the Glen. Why not start with the Aherlow Nature Park Trail; its ideal for children being a short
walk – about an hour – and a great way to introduce them to the different
species of trees which are clearly labelled.
Its rich in social history too as you’ll
pass a ruined famine house and your route is also part of the original Bianconi
route, named after Carlo Bianconi,
an Italian from Como who developed Ireland’s “pony express” routes in the early
1800s in Munster. Indeed, the road that traverses the Glen is known as The Coach Road reflecting its
heritage as one of the principle routes plied by Bianconi’s coaches known as Bians.

After your initial trail, then, you have to
decide what trails to enjoy next. The The Aherlow Failte Society has produced comprehensive detailed guides on all the eight
principal looped walks. For the more adventurous walker, there are the Galtee linear
walks ranging from the Lake Muskry hike to the more challenging Galteemore Hike. While all
these hikes can be self-guided, consider booking one of the local guides such
as Mike or Jimmy. Or consider going to the Glen for one of its walking festivals
– one in late January, the other over the June bank holiday weekend. Indeed, the local walking club, The Galtee Walking Club, has a range of
weekend walks, often in the Glen and surrounding areas; this is great way to
meet the locals and have them share their knowledge with you of the Glen.

CHURCHES
The Glen has a rich pagan and Christian
heritage, the former reflected in the Darby’s Bed site just above Galbally.
Monastic Christianity is evidenced by the St.
Pecaun’s complex of ruins and a holy well, St. Berrihert’s Kyle and the Franciscan
ruined monastery at Moore Abbey.
Lisvernane - With the dawn of catholic emancipation in the 1830s, catholic
church building began in the Glen with the construction of Lisvernane’s Church
of the Sacred Heart at a cost of £700 in 1835. Periodically refurbished since
then, the church is in regular use every week.
Galbally - A year later, the building a new church commenced in Galbally at
a cost of £900. However, this church deteriorated in the earlier decades of the
last century and was replaced by a modern-style building – The Church of Christ
the King – which was consecrated in 1973.
Bansha – At the eastern end of the Glen lies the village of Bansha where
the current catholic church dates from 1807 with periodic refurbishments.

VILLAGES OF THE GLEN
Galbally – From the Gaelic, An Galbhaille, meaning the town of the stranger
or foreigner, Galbally today is a welcoming place to the tourist and local
alike. Back in 1994, it won the accolade of Ireland’s tidiest townand more recently, in 2010, was awarded the
Pride of Place prize by Co-Operation Ireland in recognition of its effort in
fostering community pride. Walking around the village and talking to the
locals, it easy to see why Galbally won these awards.
Lisvernane – The small village of Lisvernane hit the headlines in 2012 when it
won the Irish language competition, An G-Team, televised by TG4. This was an
All Ireland reality-TV competition to select the community that could rise to
the challenge of integrating spoken Irish to the daily lives of all the
community. Try a cupla focal (Gaelic: a few words) with the locals!
Rossadrehid – The Glen’s smallest village, it always scores highly in tidy town
competitions, described by judges as a
most attractive peaceful village of parks and bridges. If you planning to
do the Lake Muskry Walk (3-4 hour walk), then, Rossadrehid will be your
starting point.
Bansha – On the eastern side of the Glen, Bansha is a busy village on the
N24 route between Limerick and Waterford. Judges in the Tidy Towns competition described
it as a “very tidy town” and
wandering around the village, its easy to see why. There are park benches,
ideal location of a picnic or just grab a bite from the local deli shop on the
main street. Take time to admire the local well-painted shops, the 19th
century catholic church and the older protestant church (built 1719), now
closed due to declining Protestant population.
ACTIVITIES
Well, walking and hiking trails abound as
you have just been reading about earlier.
Cycling - But there is so much more. If you prefer to explore the Glen by
bicycle, the Glen is criss-crossed by quiet rural roads ideal for relaxed
cycling. Either bring you own bikes or just hire bikes from Gerry & Maria
Bailey who are based in Kilshane on the Tipperary Town side of the Glen. If
you’re more of a keen cyclist, then, the 82km Glen of Aherlow signed posted
route will test you with two challenging climbs and fast descents on each
climb.
Mountain
Biking - If you prefer a more heart- thumping
experience, the mountain trails in the Glen are perfect for mountain biking.
Quad
Biking - Prefer more of an adrenalin rush? Then,
try quad biking on selected forest trails. Bikes and all the gear can be hired
locally with an experienced guide.
In
the saddle - Apart from exploring the Glen on foot,
by cycling or quad bike, you might want to explore mounted on one of the ponies
from Hillcrest Riding Centre which

season kicks off in the Glen in April with Fonn Rince, an annual sean nos
(traditional Irish dancing festival) with workshops and concerts. If you
enjoyed Riverdance, then, this is so much better – Irish dance in its purest
form performed by Ireland’s leading exponents like Seosamh Ó Neachtain and Edwina Guckian.

and More - In July, enjoy the Clonbeg Pattern Festival. Now, this is not a knitting &
stitching festival so leave you needles at home! The word pattern derives from the Irish word patrun, where each parish had a
patron saint. The patron of Clonbeg CoI Church that you read about earlier is St. Sedna and the Clonbeg Pattern is a
weekend festival based at the Church and the nearby village of Lisvernane. Each
year, the festival combines an enjoyable mix of concerts, seisuns, an
ecumenical service and a prayer service at St. Sedna’s Well adjacent to the
church.
VILLAGES OF THE GLEN

festival held in July that attracts the cream of traditional Irish talent like
harpist Cormac de Barra and fiddler Maire Breatnach. It comprises a weekend of
workshops, seisuns and concerts based at Tig Roy Cultural Centre and other venues in the Glen.

from the Glen, has regular visiting theatre companies and art exhibitions. Or
head over to Cashel to theBru Boru Centre, nestled in the shadows of the Rock of Cashel, has hosts
regular traditional Irish music concerts and dance performances.

FAMILIES
So many of the activities highlighted so
far as well as the local attractions will appeal to kids, whether the under-12s
or those going into the teenage years. Combinations of walking, hiking,
cycling, pony trekking and quad biking will capture most kids’ imaginations.
Also, accommodation options such as camping
or working farm guesthouses (more
details follow) available in the Glen will also capture your kids interest and
make the holiday memorable.
For the under 12s, consider a visit to the
Empire of Fun activity centre in nearby
Tipperary Town which provides an indoor adventure and sports activities for the
younger kids.
The Excel Arts Cinema also shows kids
movies every Saturday and Sunday afternoon, ideal if the weather is not
suitable for outdoor activity in the Glen.
To capture kids’ imagination, a trip to the
Mitchelstown Cave is a great
experience. It’s on the other side of Galteemore, about a forty minute drive
either via Galbally or Cahir. Discovered in 1833, this subterranean world will
appeal to kids and adults alike. Entrance is by guided tour only and good value
at €20 in total for two adults and three kids. The cave is about 1km long and you’ll taken through three
very large caverns, which have amazing acoustics so much as that concerts are
held here on an occasional basis.
TRANSPORT
While the Glen of Aherlow is a hidden gem,
it’s easily accessible.
FLYING
IN - If you’re flying to Ireland, then, Shannon or
Cork Airports are one hour thirty minutes on average, whether travelling by
car, train or bus.
DRIVING - Reaching the Glen by car is the most common option and just 20
minutes off the M8 Dublin-Cork motorway.
RELAX
BY TRAIN - Let the train take the strain by
travelling to Limerick Junction Station, one hour or 1hour 30 minutes from Cork
and Dublin respectively. From Limerick Junction, you can either take a taxi
(€25-€30 approximately), cycle or pick-up your pre-hired bikes.
BUS
OPTIONS - Bus Eireann serves Tipperary Town either
directly or with connections from all the airports and other major Irish
cities. This is convenient and a good value option to save your money for
spending on activities in The Glen.
Once you’re based in the Glen, all the
local attractions are easily accessible by walking, cycling or the occasional
car/bus/taxi for trips outside the Glen as the Glen stretches about 40km from
Galbally in the West to Bansha in the East.

termed as the Golden Vein of Ireland by a British official in the 17th

the Glen, then, there is rich variety of local produce that will motivate you

Local farmers supply their milk to Tipperary Co-Operative Societyin
nearby Tipperary Town where the milk is used to make smoked cheddar, Gouda and
Emmental. Now, its likely that you won’t have seen this wonderful cheese in
many Irish supermarkets as it’s almost all shipped out to discerning consumers
in France. However, nip into the Supervalu on the corner of Abbey St/Kickham
Place in Tipperary Town where the range of Tipperary cheeses is sold
exclusively. You’ll also be able to buy Tipp Co-Op butter here, either for spreading
on locally baked soda bread or for
use in your cooking and baking.
For your meat supply, nip into Tipperary
Town; visit Malley's on Bridge St or Lewis’s on the Main St. Both butchers have
farms locally and are members of the Associated
Craft Butchers of Ireland.
Local
farmers’ markets on Saturdays in nearby Tipperary
Town and Cahir at the eastern edge of the Glen are ideal place to stock up on local
vegetables and emerging artisan food
producers too. Examples include Knockara Pates produced by Maria Mulcahy
near the village of Emly in the shadow of the Galtees. . Established in 2004,

Aherlow Failte Tourist Office is the Coach Road Inn. Originally, this would
have probably been an Inn where Bianconi’s pony express would have stopped.

Bar is traditional bar, a real find, very popular
with hikers after a long day and hosts informal seisuns.

out the Ballinacourty Caravan &Camping Park. It has similar facilities to
the Aherlow site though also has “animal farm” located within Ballinacourty’s
Victorian Kitchen Garden. This is a great experience for kids, especially city
kids, to see (and feed) the rabbits as well as other farm animals: hens, pics,
sheep etc. It’s these simple experiences that will make the holiday memorable
for kids…and bigger kids too!
YOUR OWN HIDEAWAY
The Glen offers plenty of self-catering
options too, either for couples, families or larger groups. Self-catering
options range from Alpine-style lodges to a 16th century castle!
Aherlow House Hotel offers self-catering Alpine-style
lodges with balconies offering stunning views of the Galtees. These lodges are
great value and offer the convenience of eating at the hotel bar and restaurant
when no one is in the mood for cooking!

Woods is a considerate development of self-catering
modern cottages which prove popular with families, groups and hiking parties,
many of whom return annually.
Rathellen House - For a larger group, consider renting out
Rathellen House, a six bedroom Georgian-style country house where
Ballymaloe-trained chef Eamon Long is on hand for those evenings when there are
no volunteers for cooking. Again, this is a great value option for larger
groups who enjoy the option of having Eamon at hand to produce some epicurean
delighted using local produce on some evenings. As one Tripadvisor reviewer from
Georgia, US commented in 2012, Rathellen House was “a fabulous stay – great
value”. Also, if you’d prefer a more traditional Irish experience, you could
also opt to rent the Coopers Cottage on the grounds of Rathellen, described by
one reviewer from Texas as “country charm at its best”.

Bansha Castle – Built in 1760, Bansha Castle has been tastefully restored and makes the ideal
location for a special time away with family or friends, catering for up to 24
adults and kids. The Castle is located on the edge of Bansha Village, on the
eastern edge of the Glen. As one Tripadvisor reviewer from New Jersey posted,
Bansha Castle is a “top class castle stay”. At first sight, you might baulk at the
rental of just under €3,000 per week. But just do the arithmetic and, if you
have a group of 15 adults, it’s amazing value at just under €30 per person per
night - another example of the great value you can experience in the Glen!

and pig farming; consider getting closer to the Glen’s families by staying in
one of farm guesthouses.
Towards the east side of The Glen, try Foxford Farm House where you’ll be looked after by Honor Russell, described on
Tripadvisor as the “Queen of Irish hospitality”.
Another option in the centre of The Glen is
Homeleigh Farm House, recommended by Lonely
Planet as an ideal base for hiking.
Other guesthouses which attract good
reviews include Aisling B&Bon the road from Tipperary Town to The Glen as
well as a number of guesthouses in and around Tipperary Town and Bansha. Just
outside Bansha, Bansha House, a 300 year old mansion which a Tripadvisor
reviewer from Boston described as “an
experience..and one that should not be missed”.
